Dents du midi trekking

I trekked from Champéry to Van Haut (Martigny) via the Susanfe valley and Lac de Salanfe — one of the most dramatic and rewarding routes in the Dents du Midi area. The trail winds through steep alpine meadows and rocky ridges, opening onto the turquoise basin of Lac de Salanfe with the jagged Dents du Midi peaks towering above. The scenery changes constantly: wildflowers and grazing cows in the lower sections, scree and towering cliffs higher up.

We spent the night at Cabane de Susanfe, a cozy mountain hut tucked into the valley below the glaciers. The hut is simple but comfortable — a hot meal, bunk beds, and panoramic views at sunrise made the stay memorable. Reserving a spot in advance is a good idea during high season, and arriving before dusk gives you time to explore the immediate surroundings and dry out gear.

I attempted to summit Haute Cimet too, the highest peak of the Dents du Midi, from the Susanfe side but had to turn back because the ascent was still heavily iced.
